Corn Oil
Oils
- Potentially Harmful
- May be Bioengineered
Definition
A refined vegetable oil extracted from corn.
Health Impact
Corn oil is high in omega 6 fatty acids, which throws off our bodies healthy balance of omega 3 to 6 and leads to chronic inflammation. Vegetable oils contain unsaturated fats that oxidize when exposed to heat, triggering inflammation in the body. Oil is typically extracted using the chemical solvent hexane. Heating corn oil produces acrylamide, an anti-nutrient compound classified as a potential carcinogen and liked to nerve, hormone, and muscle dysfunction. Corn oil that is not labeled as organic or non-GMO is likely sourced from GMO or bioengineered corn. Check for the warning "Contains a bioengineered ingredient" in the ingredients list to confirm.
